About Me

Tom Bennett and Jenn

My name is Tom Shaw.  I was born in upstate New York, but grew up on Long Island and in North Carolina.  While in North Carolina, I attended the University of North Carolina Chapel where I received a B.A. in Radio, Television, and Motion Pictures.  I later moved to Atlanta, Georgia  where I founded and ran a multimedia production company that worked for clients such as CNN and Coca-Cola.

In 2006, I received my Master of Education from Georgia State University.  Also, in that year, I moved to Louisville, Kentucky and began teaching social studies at Central High School.  I am working on my degree in Library Media Education to further my horizons and to increase my knowledge of inquiry based learning.

I have a 9 year old son named Bennett from a previous marriage.  He keeps me busy with his interests in ice hockey, cross-country, swimming, diving, chess, science club and piano lessons.  I also play ice hockey, guitar (semi-professionally), and piano (not well).  I collect old vinyl albums and enjoy brewing my own beer.

This past summer, I married the love of my life, Jenn.  We were childhood friends who only saw each other one week a year, while on vacation in the 1970s and early 80s.  30 years after our families last vacationed together, we reunited as middle aged kids on Facebook.  This time, it’s for good.

  1. Tom, I like your site and your introduction was neat. I look forward to working with you this semester as we near the LME finish line.

    • I’ve always wanted to teach. I started getting concerned when the kids in my neighborhood in Atlanta didn’t seem to know a lot of the basic things I knew in school at their age. I thought that I should do something instead of just complaining about it, which is what most people do.
